"Two million people have borrowed so much they will never escape their debts, Britain's biggest debt firm said.
It warned a record number of families face a lifetime of living in the red as they struggle with huge borrowings from loans and credit cards.
These people - equal to more than double the population of Birmingham (population of Birmingham: 5,3 million) - have 'passed the point of no return' and can only just manage to make their minimum monthly repayments.
Unless they are lucky enough to get an unexpected windfall, they are destined to spend the rest of their lives in debt.
It comes as the Conservatives warned Britain's personal debt mountain from mortgages to credit cards is growing by £1 million every four minutes.
And every seven minutes, a person is being declared bankrupt after becoming overwhelmed by debts which they could not cope with.
Speaking at a Conservate Debt Summit, Shadow Chancellor George Osborne said 'people are simply failing to cope' under Britain's £1.3 trillion debt
